Based on my plan of action, (mentioned in the previous blog post) the next stage of my project would be to conduct several artist research sketchbook pages and review what can be taken as inspiration from all of these artists. I first wanted to look at one of the artists that inspired me to experiment with typography and hand lettering; Adam Daley Wilson.

His work explores subjects that are similar to that in which I usually explore; culture, society, politics etc, and he does so in such a unique and enticing way. Much of his work consists of large scale, 2D typographic print installations, that are simplistic yet extremely effective. The simplicity of the techniques he uses are enticing but the scale of the work dramatically increases the drama. Something as simple as printing questions onto paper is turned into something so powerful and eye catching when it is turned into a large scale installation.

It’s seeing work like this that makes me want to create a large installation piece. It’s dramatic, enticing, and really puts a focus on the message that the artist is wanting to put across to his audience. Gathering research on Adam Daley Wilson, has allowed me to be influenced and inspired in so many ways. I don’t want to pass off his ideas as my own, instead I want to use his work as inspiration to make rational and effective decisions on my own design ideas. Based on Wilson’s installations, moving forward into the design stage, I will take some of the features of his work and use them as inspiration for that of my own: large scale individual pieces, large installations, text on individual pieces of paper, black text, layering of text, abstract art, and minimal colour palette. Wilson has been an extremely useful artist to research and I believe my design ideas will benefit greatly from conducting this artist research.
