Tutorial with Angela

Talking with Angela has actually really opened up my thinking in terms of my project. Based on the research I had conducted previously to my tutorial session with Angela on the 31st October 2018, I was sure that I was somehow going to incorporate mirrors into my final design, as I was really interested in the idea of seeing infinite versions of the same image repeated, simply through the positioning of two mirrors. I was going to somehow feature text into the mirrors, however, the exact positioning and thought behind this text was still unknown. Yet once I had spoken to Angela, my thoughts on my mirror idea had changed.

I was still extremely interested on the subject of how we visually interpret text. However, by talking more about my project, I realised that my work doesn’t necessarily have to be an obvious, visual statement of the understanding of text. Instead of focusing solely on illusions of text and visual perceptions related to typography, we discussed focusing on how and why people interpret the way we do. For example, we can all read the same newspaper, yet we all have different interpretations of what we have read. This could be due to culture, religions, beliefs and upbringing. During our discussion Angela mentioned that, where she comes from many people speak using a lot of metaphors, meaning that anyone who isn’t Greek or lives in Greece would have trouble understanding what they are talking about. This comment resonated with me. It left me thinking about how my family and I have little phrases that other people may not understand, but if they heard it then they may try to sub-conciously analyse the phrase in order to put their take on what they think that phrase may mean. I think this could be a really interesting route to go down and start investigating; how and why do people understand text the way they do?

Moving forward, it’s clear to see that I now have to conduct thorough research into the chosen field of this project before I can fully commit to designing a final piece for the exhibition. If I quickly jump ahead now at this stage in the project, the outcome will not be well informed instead, it will lack depth and clarity.
