I feel that at the moment, I am focusing solely on technical aspects of the research stage in my project, and forgetting that I am actually an art student. This means looking into other artists and ways of working, yet I believe that I have slightly lost sight of this. So, to get myself into an artist’s mind set once again, I thought it would be beneficial to get myself stuck into some artist research. My interest lies in the world of typography, words and lettering, so the obvious choice was to look at an artist who encompasses these interests of mine. Ralph Ueltzhoeffer.

I wanted to focus solely on Ueltzhoeffer’s text portraits, as these have the greatest relationship to my own work. He uses words that have been found to represent certain celebrities and supposedly what they are like. We do not know these people personally, so the only way we understand these people (or so we think) is through social media, television and the internet. This is quite interesting because without knowing these people personally, we actually don’t know anything about them. Yet these words and information are what we use to create our interpretations of these celebrities. This idea is used by Uelthoeffer to physically create the images of these celebrities. It is a representation of how we perceive people to be. What we think of them and what they are like. I am intrigued by the idea of using text to create image, however this got me thinking…what is my project actually about?! What am I trying to answer with my outcome and where is it taking me. I need to do some serious thinking.
