I believed that it would be interesting to conduct some research into the graphological understanding of my own handwriting. This is all solely based on Kathi McKnight’s graphological assumptions of the links between handwriting and personality traits. To make this test more conclusive about my thoughts towards graphology, I decided to use several people that I know extremely well, inside and out, as a basis for my experiment. I chose to analyse the handwriting of myself, my mum, dad, sister, boyfriend and several of my friends.

On these two sketchbook pages above, are the handwritten names of myself, mum, dad and sister, and it’s clear to see that we all have extremely different handwriting, however does their graphological evaluation correspond with their actual personality traits. I highlighted the traits that did match the person’s personality in green, and the ones that didn’t in red. I was highly disappointed in my graphological evaluation of my own handwriting because it suggested that I aimed low in life, that my hopes and dreams had been crushed as well as insinuating that I felt insecure within myself. I disagree with all of these statements. The more I analysed other people’s handwriting, I came across traits that were similar to their own, and traits that completely didn’t fit them at all.

I therefore concluded, from this brief experiment that graphology is temperamental and; although I was hoping that it would, that graphology doesn’t actually feature very much in what I want to create as an outcome. I’m thankful that I conducted the research into this way of analysing the text we read, however, I believe my outcome will be focussed more on the aesthetics of the handwriting and the meaning behind the words, rather than what the handwriting says about each specific individual.
